As November approaches, so too does a significant opportunity to address a critical issue facing men in Nottingham and beyond: mental health. This Movember, we’re turning our focus towards prevention, early intervention, and promotion of mental well-being among young men aged 16-35. Join us in our mission to create a Nottingham where every young man feels supported and mentally resilient.
The Silent Crisis: Mental Health and Suicide Rates
Recent data paints a stark picture of the mental health challenges that men and boys in Nottinghamshire are facing. Anxiety, stress, and depression have become all too common. In Nottingham City alone, 85 suicides were recorded in the recent three-year period, with over 78% of them affecting men and boys. Globally, a shocking statistic emerges: on average, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, making it the leading cause of death among men and boys under 50.
Beyond the alarming suicide rates, there’s another silent problem plaguing men: loneliness. A staggering 81% of the male population in Nottinghamshire grapples with waves of loneliness, often lacking close relationships. This isolation further exacerbates the mental health challenges they face. Furthermore, a startling 4 out of 5 men find it difficult to seek or ask for support when struggling with their mental health. It’s time to break this cycle.
Loneliness: The Unseen Battle: Beneath the vibrant facade of Nottingham lies another silent struggle – loneliness. An astounding 81% of the male population in Nottinghamshire grapple with waves of isolation, often lacking close relationships. This pervasive loneliness further exacerbates the mental health challenges they face, creating a cycle that’s difficult to break.
The Stigma Barrier: Seeking Support in Silence: One of the most significant hurdles in addressing men’s mental health in Nottingham is the stigma surrounding it. A startling 4 out of 5 men find it difficult to seek or ask for support when struggling with their mental health. This silence often leads to a sense of isolation and exacerbates their mental health conditions.

International Men’s Day: On the 19th of November, International Men’s Day, we aim to raise global awareness for the myriad issues that men face. It’s a day to emphasise the critical importance of men’s mental health and the necessity for preventive measures, early intervention, and mental health promotion. Participating in our fundraising events or organising your own are straightforward yet effective ways to contribute to this cause. We’re calling on all our amazing supporters to grow those ‘staches, ‘beards, and even get creative with some mo-inspired designs! “No Shave November,” or “Movember,” is a campaign that aligns perfectly with our mission to reduce loneliness and promote positive mental health among young people aged 16-35 in Nottingham. Here’s how it contributes to our cause:
1. Initiates Conversations and Builds Connections: Growing facial hair serves as a visual conversation starter. It provides an opportunity for our community to come together and discuss men’s health issues, including mental health. It’s a chance to strengthen the bonds between our Wolfpack members.
2. Symbol of Wolfpack Solidarity: Participants growing beards or moustaches become visible symbols of our collective support for those who may be struggling with mental health challenges. It’s a powerful way to show that we stand together, ready to support one another.
3. Funds for Mental Health Initiatives: Through sponsorship, donations, and events, we can raise funds specifically earmarked for mental health initiatives. These funds will directly support our programs, providing resources and assistance to those in need.
4.Conversations Around Mental Health : By participating in Movember, we actively demonstrate that we are open to discussing men’s health, including mental health. This helps to break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues, encouraging others to seek the support they may need.
5. Promotes Self-Care and Mental Well-being: The campaign encourages participants to take care of themselves, both physically and mentally. Engaging in activities that promote self-care is a vital aspect of maintaining good mental health, and it’s a practice we advocate for at The Wolfpack Project.
